At the heart of our philosophy is Prof. Jak Othman, a world-renowned martial artist, historian, innovator and philosopher. With decades of experience in In martial arts Prof. Jak has dedicated his life to preserving and modernizing traditional Nusantara martial arts.
His Silat Tomoi system—which we proudly teach—transforms the deadly battlefield techniques of traditional Silat into an effective kickboxing-based fitness program, designed for both self-defense and peak athletic conditioning. Prof. Jak Othman believes that martial arts should be practical, adaptable, and accessible to all, rather than being limited to competitive fighters or traditionalists.
His influence extends beyond Malaysia, as he has trained elite fighters, military personnel, and martial artists worldwide, and has been featured in international martial arts seminars, publications, and documentaries. His philosophy is simple but profound:
"A martial artist is not measured by how many fights they win, but by how many lives they can positively impact."
This guiding principle is reflected in the way we run Berantai Combat Penang—we train not just to fight, but to build discipline, confidence, and resilience.
Silat Tomoi is a battle-hardened martial art with roots in ancient Nothern Malay combat traditions. Unlike mainstream Muay Thai, Silat Tomoi incorporates unorthodox strikes, deceptive footwork, and close-quarters techniques that were used in war and street survival.
What makes Silat Tomoi unique is its ability to blend traditional fight mechanics with modern combat sports training. It emphasizes:
✅ Devastating strikes (elbows, knees, and powerful kicks)
✅ Rapid footwork and angling for evasiveness
✅ Counter-attacks
✅ Explosive conditioning for strength and endurance
At Berantai Combat Penang, we teach Silat Tomoi Kickboxing, a refined version that retains its battlefield effectiveness while making it accessible for modern fitness and self-defense.
Silat Harimau Berantai, translated as "Chained Tiger Silat," is a distinguished Malaysian martial art with deep roots in Javanese traditions. The style is renowned for its intricate blade techniques and fluid movements, embodying the predatory prowess of a tiger.
This art was introduced to Malaysia by the legendary Javanese pendekar (warrior), Haji Asraf, affectionately known as "Harimau Berantai" or the "Chained Tiger." His legacy was carried forward by the late Pendekar Haji Othman Kassim, the first-generation leader of the Harimau Berantai Silat clan in Malaysia. Under his guidance, the art flourished and was passed down to his son, Prof. Jak Othman, who began his training at the tender age of five.
Prof. Jak Othman has dedicated his life to preserving and promoting Silat Harimau Berantai. His expertise encompasses a wide array of weaponry, including the keris (dagger), kerambit (curved blade), sundang (swords), and many others. His teachings emphasize practical application, adaptability, and the seamless integration of traditional techniques into modern self-defense scenarios.
At Berantai Combat Penang, we honor this rich heritage by offering comprehensive training in Silat Harimau Berantai. Our curriculum is designed to impart the art's philosophical underpinnings and combative strategies, ensuring that students not only learn to defend themselves but also appreciate the cultural significance of this esteemed martial tradition.
